Washer dryer angst - repair or sling?

Hi all - your opinions required please.

I've had my washer dryer for four years and last year it conked out. I got it repaired (but I'm sure the guy was an uber-cowboy as he couldn't fix the dryer component). It lasted about three months and then died again.

I've been saving for a newbie washer dryer but could really do with spending the money on other required household items (how is it everything gives up the ghost at the same time?). My warranty is up and now I'm wondering if it's worth attempting another repair or whether I should finally give up and buy a new one? Is it a false economy to spend money on another repair?

Not very environmentally friendly, but TBH would probably be cheaper buying a new one.

If you decide to buy a new machine, check online using Kelkoo (https://www.kelkoo.co.uk). Don't use the search box on the first page - work your way through the links and then search - that way you can sort by price.

Also, do you really need a washer dryer? They're a compromise at best because you usually can't dry the same amount as you wash, thus you end up dioing 2 lots of drying & using 2 lots of leccy. A separate tumble-drier will probably cost about £100 and would pay for itself in leccy saved - you could put it in a shed or garage if you don't have room in the house.

Thanks tawnyowls. I think you're probably right.

I'm afraid a washer dryer is a must (although I only use the dryer occasionally for emergencies. Mostly I hang stuff up over the bath to dry). I live in a very small flat and on the fifth floor with no room for a tumble dryer.

I'll do my level best for the environment by offering my old one on Freecycle. I'm sure some clever person could use it for parts or whatever!
