Tips for DIY at new home.

Hi folks,

I recently shifted to a new build home of ours. I am not a big DIYer myself, but I wanted to do now. As its a new home, we have not curtains, nails for hanging pics and so.

Where do I start ??? I would like to have nails to hang on some pictures, A big mirror (> 20 KG), Curtains, Blinds, Bathroom mirrors (needs to nail on wall tiles), Some stand in Bathroom (nailed to wall tiles again), needs some sort of shelves in my inbuilt wardrobe (as it has got nothing other than doors).

Any sites explaining all the above. Your suggestions/recommendation are really appreciated.

Thanks

I'd recommend picture hooks for your pictures. Your heavy mirror will need to have proper fixings and rawl plugs into the wall to support that kind of weight. Again as others have said do NOT nail into tiles! You need to fix things with screws for which you will need a special drill bit intended for drilling through tiles. I'd recommend with Christmas coming up you drop some hints about a good diy book!

Plenty of good DIY books in the library. Find one that you like and then buy yourself a copy to keep for permanent reference.

Would I suggets you might need to invest in a basic tool kit (Screwfix do one that covers all the basics that won't braek the bank) and a half decent battery Drill (18volt is ideal) with a selection of masonry and wood bits. At least then you will have a half decent start. Drilling into tiles is not everybody's cup of tea and you will need special tile bits for the drill. You may wish to get a Handyman in to do that. Shouln't cost you more than £40, but may save a lot of grief.

If you are seriously considering tiling tiles then I suggest that you get hold of the DIY book as soon as possible.
