Private Members Bill - Tenant help in LL repossession cases

Options
Brian Iddon MP (Bolton South East) will be pushing for better protection for tenants in the private rented sector who receive little notice when their LL's property is repossessed by the lender. He was drawn first in the Private Members Ballot and has chosen this issue above others.

Shelter, Crisis, Citizens Advice and the Chartered Inst of Housing have jointly welcomed the news.

Are you aware of whether there is a government statement on whether it will get any time?

The Protection of Private Tenants (Mortgage Repossession)Bill is due to be debated on Jan 29th so maybe MSEers want to start badgering their own MPs now...

Obviously less time for PMBs with Gen Election looming in 2010 ( Brian Iddon retiring then apparently)
  • Is this just for Engerland or do the Scots also get to play???

Should we all write to our MPs to ask them to urge this bill through?

If your MP is a tory, point out that the tory shadow housing minister, Grant Shapps, supports the bill and has complained that the government should have done something about this months ago.

If your MP is a lib dem, point out that their housing spokesperson, Sarah Teather, supports the bill.

If your MP is labour, point out that Iddon is a labour MP and that government housing minister John Healy has promised "every assistance" to Iddon for his bill.

The only people who don't want this bill are the CML. Their statement says this situation doesn't apply to many tenants - well in that case then it shouldn't make much difference to the lenders, should it? Encourage your MP to stand up for helpless (and quite probably innocent) tenants and make lenders wait a couple of months before repossessing to give people a fair chance to find somewhere else to live.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
