Who pays? is there an excess?

I had an accidental prang a few days ago. It was my fault. There was noone in the other vehicle. There is no damage to my car but i have damaged the bumper of the other van. Owner says it needs a new bumper and said we could sort it cash rather than insurances, but i am completely baffled as if it is this amount is it worth going through my insurance. I have a compulsary excess of £100 and a voluntary excess of £400. If we were to go through insurance, as i will not be claiming for any damaged on mine but just on the other persons would i have to pay any excess and if so would it be £500 total. I am completely baffled by this.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Excess is only payable for claims for damage to your own vehicle and not for third party claims.
If you claim only for his damage you wont have an excess to pay - double check your policy book to make sure but I dont know of any motor insurer that applies an excess to TP claims.
You will however lose no claims discount/ increase premiums even though not claiming for your own damages.
What ever happens, you must inform your insurers about the incident but it may be worth settling in cash to prevent losing the NCDAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Astaroth - I'm not sure your comment is true. I remember having an accident some time ago where I went into the back of someone. No damage to my car but I had to go through my insurance for the damage to the other car. I had to pay the excess.0
