Upgrading laptop memory (1GB + 2GB = Fail?)

Hi
I've currently got a single 1GB memory in my laptop, but I recently purchased a 2GB memory module which I intended to swap out for the old module.
However I was wondering if it is possible to have both the 1GB and 2GB memory installed, or would this cause any problems?
It's a Dell D520 if that makes any difference.
Thanks!

The Crucial website states
"Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.Maximum memory for systems with the Intel 945GM chipset is 4096MB, maximum memory with the Intel 940GML chipset is 2048MB"
There may be an issue regarding a matched pair or with the Intel chipset but since you have already bought the 2GB stick suggest you try it.0 -
When you install the 2 gb remove the 1gb put the 2 gb in its place and put the 1 gb into the spare slot or it may not recognise the 2gb if you put it in the spare slot.0

The Dell D520 has two memory slots so you can indeed have both in.0 -

Just because a computer has 2 memory slots does NOT mean that 2 different types will work:idea:0 -
how about buying another 2 GB and install both?
mind you, that might be a bit wasted for 32 bit, if the 2 + 1 would work anyway0
