credit card charges

I recently paid off my entire balance to my virgin mastercard and cancelled the card thinking that was the end of it . when i have just received another bill telling me that i owe them another 85 pounds due to interest charges and returned payment fee as i cancelled the direct debit. is there any way i can get away without paying these charges as it has just cost me nearly 4 thousand pounds to clear the credit card and another 85 pound would just add insult to injury, any advice would be much appreciated.

You don't give enough detail about the interest charged, but it looks like you didn't pay in time or in full. So no, I don't think you will get the interest back.

With regard to the returned payment fee, you could ask politely and they may refund it as a gesture of goodwill. If that fails, apparantly you can sue or threaten to sue them and they may pay up before it gets to court.
  • Funny but I am having a similar experience.

My Virgin statement was dated 2 June and showed a balance of 1,555.41. It also stated that the minimum payment of 24.47 would be taken by DD on or after the 2 July.

I called them on the 30 June and paid by debit card the balance of 1530.94 and then went on to tell them that I wanted to close the account. It was at this point I was put through to closures? Once there I was advised not to close the account down completely as Virgin were still offering an interest free balance transfer.

I agreed to this and asked for the 1530.94 to be paid back to my bank account as it better off there then with Virgin and especially as they would not be charging me a BT fee.

However, this morning I get my statement dated 2 July and on it shows the two payments; 1530.94 & 24.47, but it also shows an interest charge of 17.13 which I don’t understand where they have calculated this from, especially as I was speaking with them a few days ago. Surely if I paid off the account the customer service agent who took the call and the payment would have told me that there would be an outstanding charge coming to me on the next statement - yes?
