Recently I opened a Balance Transfer card with Abbey. As you advised I went into the branch.They were useless and had no idea what I required.They took some basic details from me and tried to dis-suade me from opening a BT card. I stuck to my guns. they took three weeks to open it.I rang back to complain. they had not told me there was a BT fee, although I had read about it in the small print, they did not bring it to my attention. I asked to speak to a manager at the call centre and I explained how I was disappointed with their service levels. The upshot is I negotiated half the fee, fantastic as I now have my £6000 overdraft on 0% for 10 months. The fee instead of being £120 was £60.

Motto here is if you dont ask you dont get.
