A simple requirement but I've downloaded several that don't work or don't do what I want and followed umpteen links to stuff that turns out not to be freeware or sites rehashing search results...
I am looking for a piece of freeware that will read all the mp3 files in a directory and set the title in the id3tags to the filename.
TIA

I use FooBar2000 for playing music. It's free, small, highly customisable and comes with built-in tools for such things as file conversion and taggging. Oh, and the sound quality make listening to iTunes sound like you've got cotton wool in your ears.
In its default state it is rather minimalist - but I like that - and it can initially require some effort to use. But it will do what the original poster asked for.
If you use it I'd recommend you also get the Advanced Controls plugin. It gives you media control buttons and a progress bar in two system tray icons.0 -

I use this, its great, used it do to my collection of over 8000 mp3's, using amazon from the Tag sources pull down menu.0 -
Thanks or all the suggestions. I checked out all three and for the benefit of anybody else looking this was my opinion of them...
MP3Tag - simple intuitive and did exactly what I needed.
Loads of other options I may use for a different project.
TagScan - has a non-standard interface which I found confusing enough to give up on. Had it been the only option I would have persevered.
FooBar - I already liked MP3Tag so I only gave this a cursory look. I don't need the play options which is what it seems more geared to.0
