Banker's exodus possible - does anyone care?

It's not about being indispensable, it's about talented staff being snapped up by rival organisations, or countries even.
HSBC has already moved it's headquarters to Asia, who's to say no other big financial institutions follow suit? Britain's economy depends on finance for jobs and tax. Drive it offshore at your peril.
I disagree .... be held to ransom by it at even greater peril.
HSBC hasn't needed a bailout. Probably wanted out of a failing economy.
Britain's economy became overdependant on the finance industry. Seems it let us down.0 -
Anyone got a sharp knife - I feel the need to cut of my nose to spite my face.
How much extra tax is everyone on here willing to pay to make up for the shortfall resulting from the loss of tax from the bankers and banks if they move abroad?
Or how about all the hairdressers, waiters, baristas, builders, solicitors and so on and on who will lose their jobs if the bankers are no longer here to employ them - I am sure they will be more than happy to be unemployed and principled...
I can't believe that when we are looking at historically unparalleled cuts in public services and increases in taxation at all levels (yes the only way to raise real revenue is to tax those on PAYE who don't earn enough to look for loopholes) people are stupid enough to swallow the spin line of blaming the bankers. Did anyone else notice that the chancellor revised down the cost of the bank bailout from 50bn to a whole 10bn - yes a big number but not a lot in the context of a 200bn deficit...I think....0 -

And we who risked our personal positions with over leveraged positions?
Treliac, its everyone's fault I think.
No, we didn't all lir!0 -

All true and totally obscene.
But ..... it was the bankers who nearly brought the country down with their poor investments. And now they want rewarding for it ....
And ..... we have a government who encouraged dependence on the financial industry and discouraged a healthy spread of other business and manufacturing across the economy.
I dunno, they did their jobs, took a punt and played the game while it was good. I don't mind bankers, I don't think it's an honorable job but neither do I presume automatically that they are the spawn of the devil. I'd like to say they don't do anything but finance isn't as easy as people make it out to be, I'm sure.
I think there's an element of jealousy that some people have got it so good. I know I'd love to be paid £64k for my job and get expenses paid on top of that. But I would hate to be an MP.0 -

They're not all going to move abroad, but perhaps they need some 'thinning out.'
They've let us down. We can't keep on bailing them out, while they continue to reward themselves for poor performance.
How do we ensure that they operate in a mutually beneficial way and don't return to past transgressions?0 -
the funny thing about some of these posters is that they say that banking is easy and they don't do very much - if they actually asked themselves what an investment bankers job was, they wouldn't have a clueI dunno, they did their jobs, took a punt and played the game while it was good.
