Banker's exodus possible - does anyone care?

Not at all but I'd like to think they wouldn't have let our economy reach it's present state.0 -
The government's idea of a specific tax on bankers bonuses is as ridiculous as the way they're going about. All the banks need to do is pay £25k before April and the rest afterwards. If some go offshore the govt loses a large amount of tax relative to the small one-off gain of this idea. Once they're paying less tax overseas it will be hard to lure them back to the British system.
The real goal is to cash in on votes by fueling public outrage at bankers, whilst deflecting economic blame from the government.
very true - feed the peasants with anger who will hate the people that are richer than them whilst the real issues are being ignored and hidden between the headlines... :rolleyes:0 -

Ah, but that ignores the fact that we own lots of 'em anyway.
So personally, I'd rather pay them less income, than pay them more income just so I could get the teeny weeny bit their accountants don't manage to salt away via tax havens/loopholes, back in tax.
Let's face it, they're rubbish at their jobs. Their jobs aren't difficult, or stressful. Or even very important.
Just vastly overpaid.0 -
I think it's a bit rich to moan that anything ABOVE 25k will be taxed, and they can get around it easy enough by simply waiting 4 months.
I don't agree with what the government have done.
However, 25k is more than a years wages for a huge chunk of the population. And these people are moaning on TV that they won't get ALL of the rest of it. And this, is just their bonus. Not their wages.
It just says "look at me, I'm greedy". And for me, that says it all, and personally would not care one jot if they left and were replaced with less greedy.0 -
It's the hypocrisy which irks the most.
These banks have still been laying off staff, and off-shoring jobs. We are talking good people losing work, educated, well trained, intelligent and hard working.
I didn't hear the investment bankers rallying around when their colleagues were losing their livelihoods? They didn't make public their worry for losing "highly talented people".
But, as soon as it's their own pockets impacted...it's a different matter.0 -

They really don't have to work hard at the fuelling. We have to hope that most of us are too sophisticated to fall for lies and trickery.
Problem is that many of us have short memories. The floating vote will be influenced by what hits the media in the week or two running up to the election.
Spin and counter spin .... it'll certainly be lots of fun.0 -

Good idea, make the banks that the government has a large stake in lose all their best staff. Then you'll really be left with the ones who are rubbish at their jobs. Not the best way to get a return on your investment or ensure better management in the future.0 -
Let them.
Many are there because of who they know, not what they know.
Ask anybody doing any job and they can't wait for the guy above them to leave so they can do their job... there are a lot of equally bright people who could take their places. Maybe people bright enough to actually do a GOOD job this time.0 -

Guess the government spin is working well. Bankers are just another job, they just happen to be the choice at the moment.
You know what I do resent? Celebrities being paid to just appear on TV. They get paid vast sums of money to do not very much and the culture of the celebrity is such that all young people in this country want to aspire to is to be someone famous. It doesn't matter what for!
And footballers, if you really loved the game so much, do you need to get paid £100k a week just to go around and run in the field for 90 minutes?
Oh sorry, forgot that the bankers are the REAL downfall of society
