Taking prescription medicine into USA

Taking prescription medicine into USA -

I am currently taking codeine for pain relief (post operatively)
I am likely to still be needing it when we fly to the States later this month - can anyone tell me what, if anything, I need to do to take it through customs with me without ending up being hauled off to a room and searched.:p

Thanks:beer:

I took Solpadol with me to America in Sept, I just took a couple of tablets (still in foil) in my hand luggage, the rest was in my case, nothing was said.
I also carried medication for diabetes and a sleep aid, both on prescription, I took a weeks supply of my diabetes tablets in my hand luggage just in case my main luggage went awol.
  • take the meds with the box and the prescription and your name and date on it and then if they do ask, you can show them. Should be no problems, I took loads of my chemo tablets through in May, had a whole stock of them and they did not say anything. You should be fine.

    1. Always carry your requirements for the whole visit + a few spares in your hand baggage.
    2. Just leave it in its original packaging.
    3. Don't forget as well that a lot of drugs in the US are known by different names than they are in Europe.
    4. You won't have a problem.

You should try going to Malaysia - the customs form you fill in has a big red warning on the top:-

The penalty for smuggling drugs is DEATH !

Thanks for the info everyone, glad I'm not going to Malaysia, I think I'd be wanting a Doctor's cover note if I was going there....

  • Id also advise get a copy of your repeat prescription (if you have one) save paying for a doctors note, ive flown to europe and USA with a repeat presciption note, 9 times outta 10 they dont even ask to see any documentation on your meds
