help.....rover 400 handset packed up

my handset for the rover 400 has packed up and won`t work.
i have changed the battery and it won`t work.
i have read some where that they can be recoded.
at the moment i am having to use a code to manually over ride the immobiliser.
but i am paranoid as if i accidently put the wrong code in more than 3 times then my car is immobilised forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or will cost a bomb to put right.
any ideas will be gratefully received.

The instructions for replacing the battery are as follows:

1. Open the handset.
2. Slide the battery out.
3. Press and hold both buttons for at least five seconds.
4. Fit the new battery Positive side + facing up.
5. Reassemble the handset.
6. Unlock the car with the key, then operate the lock button at least 4 times.

The handset should now be ready for use.

You should have a second handset that was supplied with the car!
