Carpet Cleaning

Options
 Ok - I hired a carpet cleaner for the lounge carpet and merrily set about doing it this morning. I have just got home to find my lounge sticks to hig heavens , presumably from the the reactivated smells in the carpet ... but worse than this my carpet has shrunk !! What do I do ... it is the hire shops fault or will I have to claim on insurance ???

Carpet now about 2 inches shy of the bay window - disaster !!!!

This can happen when using these machines. Can you repair carpet? You can buy deodorants to get rid of smell. If you claim insurance most won't pay if you say you done it yourself.
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

When I paid a guy to clean my carpet he asked if I wanted to pay extra for conditioning. I said no, and as he left he suggested I get an empty spray bottle and put in some ordinary fabric softener, diluted, and spray the carpet over just before vacuuming (leaving it about an hour).

Sounds like your carpet was 100% wool. If you got it too wet it would shrink.

Ring someone like Servicemaster for advice. They specialise in these sort of things. It could be that if you leave it in situ it will spread out a little over time.

Came down this morning hoping for a miracle or at least a reduction in the smell but it's worse if anything ! I will try the fabric conditioner route this morning - thanks for the suggestion.

Ironic thing is that I have been debating about getting a new carpet but thought would clean it to see if it looked any nicer (was here when I bought the house and doesn't really go with my things) nw it looks like I am going to have to go ahead and get a new one anyway - just had to pay £30 to hire a carpet cleaner to decide !!
