The Ryan Report

my mum was brought up in one of the catholic homes in ireland as where her 4 brothers and sisters in the 1940s until she was 16, she had an awful time in there and is still tramautised by it today, especially now that the Ryan report has come out its brought it all back to her, the thing is although I can listen to her when she wants to talk, i feel it would help her more if she could talk to someone who had been through the same thing, does anyone know if there is any support out there, she was in floods of tears today and i dont really know how to help, she was diagnosed with anal cancer last year and has really been through it, all though she in remission at the moment so its been a traumatic year or so what with one thing and another

From a personal pov I know that when issues from my childhood raised their heads a few years ago, it was very useful to find an internet forum where those of us with common experiences could help each other come to terms with our experiences.

I'm sorry, I have no idea if there are any groups that would be suitable for her but I would also approach her GP and get some counselling via that route.

several helplines here. if she cant talk on the phone or doesnt want to, then any of these can point you in the right direction locally. Good luck and hope you mum gets the help she needs. The catholic church had a lot to answer too for brushing the historic abuse under the carpet and so did alot of other religious denominations.

youre absolutely right, they do have a lot to answer for, my mother and her siblings ended up in there because my grandmother came over to england to work so she could send money back for them, she left them in what she thought was the capable hands of her younger sister, but she neglected them, her older sister who was 10 at the time tried to do her best for the other children but they were always hungry, so a well meaning uncle reported her to the authorites, and the outcome was my grandmother was summoned back to ireland to the courts, who then awarded them to the nuns, my mum says she can still remember them tearing her and the four other kids away from my grandmother, she says i will never forget the look on my Mother's face as we were taken away
