OK, this is such a stupid question and I feel really embarrassed asking it but...
I'm trying to get my mum's computer onto the net. I've bought a telephone socket adaptor which I want to plug into an existing (extension) phone socket to enable both phone and computer to be plugged in at the same time, rather than unplugging the phone and plugging in the comp.........you get the picture!
BUT... as soon as the adaptor is in place and both phone and computer are plugged into it, the phone rings all the time. Please can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm not techie at all so please keep the advice simple!
Thank you very much.

It sounds like some sort of wiring fault, is it approved for use on BT network?
Ever thought of moving to broadband, it's about the same price as dial up nowadays, much more useable, and will solve your problem.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks albertross. Yes, it's BT approved. I guess broadband is the answer!0

This is going back to something that happened to me many years ago when I first started using modems .. the other phones in the house all started 'tinkling'. A friend of mine (who is a spark) took the phone sockets apart and, using a pair of snips, simply cut the components out of the little boxes, put it back together again and everything worked. I am not suggesting you try this but it might be related to the type of telephone sockets that you have in your house.
Can I also add that my first modem was 1200 baud and came from BT directly. They advertised second hand Hayes compatible modems in a magazine at a dirt cheap price so I ordered one. When it arrived it did exactly what it said on the box .. it was Hayes compatible, it plugged into BT, it connected just fine, it gave a speed of 1200baud .. the bit they didn't tell me was that it was the size of a filing cabinet.
