ESA Backdate? Delayed medical assessment

Hi All
I'm helping someone out with an ESA claim and am attending a medical assessment with them this month. My query relates to backdating. I can't seem to get a clear answer from DWP/Jobcentre! Maybe there isn't a clear answer? Here's the situation
Person commenced on ESA March 09. Person missed an invite to attend a medical in connection with his claim (not sure of date was during the summer). Good cause for missing medical was established/accepted by DWP.
Despite prompting/phone calls etc, DWP have only just now got round to arranging said medical assessment for this month.
Since March 09 to now, person has been on personal allowance rate of ESA (i.e. same rate as person would get with JSA).
Question --> If person "passes" medical and gets allocated into either work-related or suppport-group on ESA can person expect back-date of extra monies due since 13-week "assessment rate" expired.
i.e. person on 64.30 from March 09 to now. Person then made an award of 89.80 weekly after medical assessment in December 09. Will the person be back-paid the difference of 64.30 and 89.80 from period 13-weeks after start to claim to now?
Thanks

Thanks for your feedback, hopefully this person will be back-dated too, providing they meet the requirements to qualify for ESA post "assessment period"0
