I am still at the stage of do i want to buy one of these or not and i would like your opinions on a few things/tell me if they will work on these two players please, then i would like to make a decision
*btw i have a simple 1gb mp3 player at the momment*
1) i want to be able to download from a legal site mp3 files, i know with the ipod (itunes) you can do this easily but i am not sure with the other?
2) is the ipod just a flimsy mp3 player?
3) i want to be able to have a 'pick at random' facility? i know the ipod will do this but will the sony?
4) does the ipod/ipod nano suffer with many more technical difficultites?
5) does the ipod hold much charge, i have read on the website its like 12hours, but whats that in real time?
thanks in advance :grinheart and any other relevent information would be good

The iPod is a very good player, although flawed in my opinion.
The battery life depends upon the model. The 30gb iPod 5th Gen has a 14 hours life, so does the Nano I believe (or maybe 12). You'll generally get around 8 though, that is what I found.
I'm currently looking for something new myself. The two players I've shortlisted are Samsung YP-Z5 and the Sandisk Sansa e260/e270.
The Samsung offers a better 35 hours battery life, and the Sandisk 20 hours. You can change the Sandisk's battery unlike with the Nano/Samsung so when it loses it's lastability after a year or so, you can replace it. The Samsung recently beat the Nano in What Hifi Sound & Vision, but only by a narrow margin.
Both are small, very robust, and not so prone to scratching (as with the iPods). They are also reasonably priced too.
I'm not sure about a random feature on the above two players as I've only held them/played around with them generally. I'm very close to buying the Samsung myself. I would like the Sandisk, but it doesn't support Ogg Vorbis which a lot of my music is now encoded in. Sandisk have opened up their firmware to the community though, which is very good of them as I'm sure someone will improve it (and add Ogg support).
Sandisk have done quite a cool marketing campaign. https://www.idont.com. If you live in London and are on the tube, you'll see loads of iSheep (say baaa...) posters around. Quite amusing.
Here are some reviews of the Sandisk/Samsung:

I will only say a couple of things quickly as you'll undoubtedly hear all sorts of opinions (mostly depending on what people own already)
Firstly, consider the capacity of the player you are looking for and remember that the memory nowadays gets filled very quickly especially if you are after good quality songs. For me 4 or 6GB would not hold a quarter of my collection.
Secondly, go to a high-street retailer and play with an iPod, comparing it to other players like the sony and see what you think. After all you may end up becoming a sheep.:rotfl:Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
Used a Ipod and the sony AW3000 (just bought the sony)
For what I've used/using the ipod and sony for I don't see the difference in sound quality, battery life appears better on the Sony and I like the style, the ipod I liked the click wheel, menu wise, both easy to navigate, the newer ipods have video capabilities which the sony doesn't....as Aiadi states go to a high-street retailer.....check them out yourself.Welcome, rogerramjet.

The 6gb version is difficult to get hold of as it's slightly newer."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -
ipods are just a fashion statement, considering the quality of Mac computers, Ipods are a shocking product that should never have gone into production in their present state.
I have one of the old Sonys (NWE405) (the new models came in in November i think?) ive used it everyday on the way to and from school (and during most of school :P) for the last 5 months... ive had tlo charge it once every, maybe 3 or 4 weeks. Its only meant to have 50 hours battery.
If you can get hold of one of the old NW series theyare the best, and in my opinion far better than the new sonys. Plus their navigation thing with the twist button thing on the side is really cool.
and of course the big benefit of a sony - ITS CHEAPER.0
