  • never had a problem with low energy lights myself but i do think they should remain available for those who need them.
to olly300 increasing the refresh rate on your monitor to 85mhz should get rid of any flicker

But that heat is wasted unless you have all your bulbs on the floor, not hanging from the ceiling.....

Well you won't get the full benefit from it, but it will still produce a heat gradient even if hung from the ceiling....

The question is are people being conned into buying energy efficient devices (bulbs, boilers, cars, TVs, computer monitors etc.) when actually the cost of manufacturing (resources & energy) & buying a new item, scrapping the old item which may have years of life far outweighs the notional & questionable evergy saving.

Go Green is becoming an industry, a marketing ploy to sell more expensive things.

Heat has to be released into room, whether from radiator or bulb.

    Heat rises & rises quickly.
  • I'm fed up with seeing masses of 40w equivalent bulbs for 97p in Wilkinsons when the 60w equivs' are £2 dearer. I have absolutely no need for 40w unless it's for the cupboard under the stairs.

Also, the bulbs tend to poke above the height of table lamp shades, so look ugly.

I'm fed up of their being few low energy/ reasonably priced alternatives for even the common halogen lamps, and the Energy Saving Trust handing out CFLs to replace traditional tungsten filaments like Smarties.

I have just put 35W GU10 Xenons in my hall and to be fair they seem brighter than the 50W halogens they replaced. Don't seem to be Xenons for MR16s on the market just very expensive branded 30W halogens. Sorry but LEDs are not powerful enough for my north-facing flat and would take years to pay for the outlay.

A timely article on the BBC site today about why these bulbs aren't the perfect answer after all.

Thanks for that link, it confirms my own experience with CFLs.

We have a five socket light fitting in the lounge and used to use 60W candle style bulbs in it. After some experimentation I found that I needed to use 20W CFLs to get the same light output.

The Phillips CFLs I bought boast a life of six years on the packaging, none has lasted more than eighteen months. I definitely feel conned !

I hate them with a passion - I'd kill for my normal lightbulbs back. They're ugly as sin, stick out above the level of my lampshades and look daft and don't light the room properly - but leave it in an insipid, new-Labour-approved gloomy glow. I end up with more lights on than if they'd just relax and give me my proper light bulbs back anyhow!

Trouble is - British Gas kept sending us boxes of the wretched creations (we're up to box number 5 of 'em now)... and I'm cheap... so it would be rude not to use 'em.

Personally, as a migraine sufferer, these energy efficient lightbulbs cause huge problems for me. How the government can legislate to inflict migraines on me is unbeliveable. No doubt it will be a piece of legislation revoked in ten years time after the health effects have been studied, and published, while we're all shouting "could have told you that YEARS ago!!"

Just had a look at a couple of online suppliers and 100w bulbs are still readily available. It's just that you are not allowed to sell them retail now. Most trade suppliers will still sell them.
