Last week I ordered a Toshiba laptop -the satellite a100- from ccl computers. The invoice and website specified 256mb ram. It has been so slow, so I have been checking the spec and find it has 192mb ram. Is this an error? The manual says an upgrade to 256 is available.

Memory Details for Toshiba Satellite A100-153
Standard Memory :256MB or 512MB or 1GB (Removable)
Maximum Memory :4GB
Total Memory Slots :2
Memory Type :200-Pin DDR2-533 SODIMM
I suspect you can put another one in the spare slot in the Laptop as only one will be used
I would recommend another 512

Thank you so much, the help is appreciated. The manual says I can upgrade, I would like to upgrade to 512. Does anyone 1) How to do this and 2) cost?0

Another 256MB costs £22 - http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/MPartspecs.Asp?mtbpoid=7AEFF731A5CA7304&WSMD=Satellite+A100+Series&WSPN=CT518158
or 512MB for £36 in the link posted by Browntoa.
That site also has an installation guide, but check your manual for specific instructions.0 -
I read the installation guide and realised I might be better asking a local computer shop as anything like that isn't my strong point. This gives me an idea of price and seems well worth the money. Thank you both.0

It's as easy as changing a fuse in a plug, undo a couple of screws and slot it in.. Loads of people who have never done it before, have come here for advice and managed it.
You will probably end up paying much more to get it supplied and done in a shop.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

You are probably right. I will ask and check how much first and if it is more than a fiver extra I will at least have a look myself.0 -
Lowestonweb has 512MB for £27.17 delivered.

:exclamati:exclamati:exclamati:exclamati:exclamati Thats very rude calling someone an idiot, and I totally disagree, because Albertross is by no means or, in any shape or form an idiot, and if you have ever read some of his posts, you might just realise this and learn something.Lord_Chris wrote:ohh dear god DONT DO IT YOURSELF albertross your an idiot beyond belief.
Of course you are perfectly entitled to disagree with him, but not in such a rude manner.
As for Toshbia laptop, I don't know, but you can certaintly open my Dell and upgrade it yourself and it does NOT invalidate your warrenty.0 -
Lordy, lordy..Chris: Pot and kettle springs to mind.. At least I can spell "You're" and "Warranty". Some work is required before your GCSE English..
Wonderfullife: thanks for your kind words.
Computer manufacturers provide a little slot for you to put the memory in. If it invalidated the warranty, the flap covering the slot would have a "Warranty void if broken" label on.. I have never seen one.

In the unlikely event that it causes "Harware Failures", the OP can take it out, and Toshiba would be none the wiser.
Prudence, if you haven't been scared off by the post above, the only thing you need to be careful about is static electricity damaging the ram chip. Sit down at a desk and fit it, and don't walk up and down the carpet with it in your bare hands, and you should be ok. Leave it in the anti-static packaging until you are ready to fit it.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
