file sharing and firewall problem

Hi all
have set up wireless laptop to pc with netgear router. print and file sharing has been enabled and works but only if firewall is disabled, internet access will work on laptop regardless of firewall settings.
I am only using windows firewall at the moment which is set on both pc's to allow sharing.
I've been through the sticky on here and on other sites but i'm stuck now. Seems I can only have sharing without a firewall.
Any suggestions??????

you have to put the individual IP addresses of each comp in the firewall safe list to allow them.
find the IP (in XP) by: Start > Run > cmd 'enter' > ipconfig 'enter'"If you really want to hurt your parents and you don't have nerve enough to be homosexual, the least you can do is go into the arts."0 -
what firewall are you using , I have to alow all traffic trough the wireless cards as an "Advanced Rule" on sygate
and Zonealarm does not support Networking if that is what you are usingEx forum ambassador

whoops
download sygate

or Kerio

when you have one installed then turn off the windows one
I can talk you through setting up the rulesEx forum ambassador

my desktop firewall is normally norton, but this has been disabled all the while i have been setting up the network. laptop only uses windows. so at the moment both are set to windows allow sharing.
my thinking was stay away from norton until i got everything working.
are you basically saying i'd be better of not attempting this with windows firewall?0 -
I would do it with Nortons on, you will only have to sort that one out later
allow ALL traffic from the Laptops IP address in Nortons
I would use a better firewall on the laptopEx forum ambassador

Easy to add to Zone Alarm:
To add a single IP address:
1. Select Firewall,Zones.
2. Click Add, then select IP address from the shortcut menu. The Add IP Address dialog appears.
3. Select Trusted from the Zone drop-down list.
4. Type the IP address and a description in the boxes provided, then click OK.
To add an IP range:
1. Select Firewall,Zones.
2. Click Add, then select IP address from the shortcut menu. The Add IP Range dialog appears.
3. Select Trusted from the Zone drop-down list.
4. Type the beginning IP address in the first field, and the ending IP address in the second field.
5. Type a description in the field provided, then click OK.

The problem with ZA is that it writes to it's DB and tvdebug.log file every second or so, so your hard disk light will be constantly on, even though you aren't doing anything on the PC.
If F+P sharing is ticked as an exception in the windows firewall, you could open up the ports 137-139, and 445 manually in the security center, firewall, exceptions, addports screen.
The firewall and NAT on your router will protect you from the outside world, but you may want to run a https://www.grc.com shields-up scan to check that nothing is exposed, especially if you have upnp enabled (default) on the router.
