Windows 7 installation

I just got the windows 7 upgrade for my sons new desktop and am going to install tonight for him.

Would I be able to install it onto my laptop too?

Also any general advice before I install would be nice as I have heard there have been a few issues with windows 7, black screens etc. or has all that been sorted now?

  • if you've bought the 3 user license then you can install it on another 2 machines...else..you paid for 1 copy..you can install 1 copy.
I have no idea what happens if you do install it on a 2nd/3rd etc..machine, maybe MS will know...maybe they won't (I guess during authentication they will know)

Although illegal,it is possible lol. However your purchase was for your son's desktop ONLY, not for your laptop
  • I think it's a bit silly really as my son does use my laptop when he is downstairs as his desktop is upstairs in his bedroom, we are both using vista at present but when he upgrades to windows 7 on his desktop he is going to have to do all his work upstairs as I won't have windows 7 on my lappy.
Why can't it just be ok to install on all PCs and lappys at a single address?
  • why can't he work on both? Programmes that run on Vista will surely run on Win 7 also.
  • If you install single user licencse on two macines, this will be picked up by windows genuine, and will then cease the two machines to use be updated etc.

I agree with the way that windows does this, as that is why they allow you to buy a licencse for 3 machines much discounted.

Remember although a big company, they still have to pay for the product to be developed, and continued support for the product is free, some companies charge you an annual support fee for software allowing you updates, so to be fair windows is a pretty good deal.

There is no reason why your son cannot use the one machine running 7 and the one using vista, the data and programs will still be usable.

That's ok then as long as it's not confusing for him, he is only just learning how to use an actual computer never mind a different OS but as long as he can find his way around both it's fine. I'm far from being a techie so can only show him the really basic stuff but I suppose he will pick everything else up along the way and will probably end up showing me a few things after a few months.
I still think it's mean not being able to install on more than one computer though. Moneygrabbing spoilsports :D

I wasn't aware of the option to buy for 3 machines as I certainly would have gone for that, I didn't see any such offers or options at the checkout.
Is it too late for me to do this as I now have taken delivery of the single license disc?

list of retailers, is a bottom......

if you brouht it from once of these you could always arue that yo told the sales person you wanted one that covered the laptop and the pc, and thats what he sold you and when you got home you found it was just a single version
