What Microsoft Security Essentials offers is a simple anti virus program that doesn't try to completely take over your computer, which also offers very good detection rates with extremely low false positives and email scanning. You also don't get nagged about upgrading to a premium version like other free anti virus programs.
It's certainly a viable contender amongst the top 3-5 free anti virus programs.0 -
Hi, Thanks for reply, I just upgraded to avg9, as I use windowsfirewall, I wondered whether to change ti mse and keep it all in house.? I have no problems with avg, other than it keeps turning defender off.How do you think it compares? AVG is poor nowadays, lagging well behind the leaders such as Avira Antivir and Avast, both the best free AV solutions.
MSE is good, gets good ratings and at the moment seems a decent free contender.0 -

In my opinion I would recommend moving away from AVG onto Avira, Avast or MSE as AVG offers less protection in addition to being more cumbersome on your computers resources.
With regards to comparisons, it's a new product and hasn't been the subject to a lot of indepth testing. One of the main resources for testing, AV Comparatives, don't seem to have made any updates for some time. In the reviews and benchmarks that are out there it did rank as one of the highest programs for having the least number of false positives (incorrectly identifying a threat, potentially deleting something critical), which is down to the way that when a file or program which is not in the definitions acts in a way that rouses suspicion, it connects back to Microsoft to check what other information is available in order for to make the best decision on what to do based on the telemetry available.
I'd rather take lower false positives than a few points of a percent in detection rates.0 -
MSE is not just Anti-Virus. I believe it also includes the functionality that was in Defender as it turns that off when you install MSE.
I've been using it for a while on Vista and Windows 7 and have been very happy with it.It's my problem, it's my problem

And it's my problem if I have no friends

Thanks everyonefor replies. I downloaded it yesterday, no problem. Set scheduled scan, did not do it, or, as I then scanned manually, it did not show any scan results in history, even that it has scanned, so , it may, have done scheduled scan and I would not know if it doesn,t inform you of last scan.Has anyone know if scan history is shown, even if nothing is detected? Used to AVG telling me when scanned and what was removed.Help gratefulIn my opinion I would recommend moving away from AVG onto Avira, Avast or MSE as AVG offers less protection in addition to being more cumbersome on your computers resources.
