My soon to be 13 year old son depeterately wants his own bank account with a debit card so he can buy things online like computer games etc. So far the best I've found for him is an HSBC account but wondered if anyone here has seen any better offers ???

I think it's a very good idea that he wants to take charge of his money with me watching carefully. I believe that teaching teenagers to act responsibly with a current account before they get the tempting offers of credit a little later only serves to help them.
I should also point out that he does not go online unsupervised like so many kids of his age. He also knows and respects that I can check at any time to make sure that he is safe online and not giving anyone his personal details.0 -
Just ensure there is no overdraft on the account and control how much is in there to begin with.
He can't spend what he doesn't have.
Even if you do eventually get him an account such as this for online expenses etc, I wouldn't reccommend putting any large sums in there. A savings account you control in his name would be more appropriate for the larger sums. Good on you anyway, I don't think it will do any harm with the correct controls in place. I don't know of any appropriate banks though, so can't contibute much more.0
