If she already has Sky then why not look at a Sky+ box?

We have a Digihome DTR (digital TV Recorder) for freeview. It cost about £90 from Tesco and is a doddle to use.

From the little I know about it, you can't pause/rewind live TV with a DVD recorder.

You will need a Sky+ box in place of your Sky box (if she carries on using Sky, or a Freesat+ box if she changes to Freesat etc etc), as it 'buffers' the programme on the hard disk as it's showing.

You need a HDD PVR. That will allow you to pause live tv.

With out another feed and tuner, she won't be able to record one channel and watch another, but sounds like you're aware of that.

You can get DVD recorders with Hard discs such as the Sony RDR range, which can record and pause live TV and burn recordings to DVD, as well as store hundreds of hours of recordings on the hard disc.

However a DVD recorder without a hard disc is far less flexible, just recording directly to a DVD disc.

Or you can opt for a PVR (or just hard disc recorder) like a Humax or Topfield, the best models have twin tuners so you can record 2 channels at once, and obviously allow for live pausing. But do some research, as some have been experiencing lock-up issues.
