brighton buses- bit of a rant

At approx. 6pm this evening, I tried to board a bus heading back into town with a portable tv I had just collected from a friend.
I had planned to get another route bus, to avoid needing to change, as the weather was threatening to change.
Sadly,I was advised by the driver that this was not allowed unless the tv was in it’s box, due to ‘health and safety’ laws, and the exposed glass being a risk to passengers? Being an old tv, the original packing was not available..
Everyone I could see on the bus was already seated, and I was aiming to carefully rest
the by now quite cumbersome tv in the luggage rack, with the screen pointed safely towards the outer wall- so minimising any ‘perceived risk’. Alas, I did not get the chance on that bus.
I have been on H&S courses before, and also worked in busy kitchens, so am fully aware of the need for taking care when carrying items, though this is the first I have heard of a tv being considered as a danger to the public??
Maybe some of the programmes shown are, but that is for another channel…
After a long and tiring walk along the seafront, thankfully avoiding any rain, I had to stop and rest. When my intended bus came along, and with a different (more friendly!) driver arrived, I asked if there was any problem with my tv, and he waved me straight on (ticket was shown!).
My main concern is that I was initially refused boarding, and faced a very long walk home, but also the lack of any consistency in applying the rules?
On other occasions, I have seen people with much larger and potentially dangerous items getting on, but with nothing said at all.
At this time of year, I am sure may passengers may be carrying several glass bottles home in their shopping, on possibly cramped buses, but which may not be visible- though still just as much, if not more, of a risk?

Problem with worse health and safty problems is that people don't know what is sensible, they just assume X Y and Z is unsafe and make guff up!
The H&S executive have a whole section devoted to combatting nonsense.0 -

You cant take a TV on!!!! Where I live people are allowed to take their dogs on the Bus (or they where last time i used the bus) I would have thought that was more of a health and safety risk!
I would have bloody well said that! lolDebt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.0
