Jobs for teenagers

Our sixteen year old has just finished her exams and is looking for a job for the summer. There seem to be plenty of recruitment sites for US teens, but I can’t find any for the UK.

Any ideas about the best place to look?

sadly it's difficult to get a job unless you have work experience, esp.at 16

easiest place might be(sorry) fast food places, just to get a good attendance record etc. mates kid work in discount book shop place, too.

try job centre plus web site, and local agencies that do catering style work?
    Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.

Does she have any skills, like computer skills? Can she type fast?
Try high street job agencies for office work. I got my first office job at 16 doing that, but I was lucky to beat the student rush, had good typing and computer skills and was more fortunate than most.
If not, there are agencies that focus more on the service sector. Its just a matter of getting a cv together and visiting a few of them with her.

ive got same problem, finished my GCSEs and even thought there are dozens of holiday parks nearby which recruit 16 yr olds, none of them will even give me an interview because im starting college in September... looks like the next 3 months are going to be very boring :(

i had the same problem between a levels and uni.

had an interview at tescos to work on the tills, went well and was told the job was mine. i then niavely asked about transfer possibilities to another store when i went off to uni in september, and suddenly they didnt want to know me anymore.

went to argos, didnt mention that i had academic aspirations, and got the job (although having since recruited staff for argos i know now that it wouldnt have been an issue if i had told them).

  • I would advise getting shopwork to be honest. Most shops will have fulltime vacancies over the summer as any students that have been working for them are likely to have gone home for the summer break. Also, she may be able to keep some weekend/evening hours for during term time when she goes back. That's what I did/do at the moment :)
    This is getting addictive! :D:eek:

working in fast foods aint such a bad thing.. except that you turn in to a FB.. just like me :)

seriously put on weight! 9 stone to 13 in two and a half years part time (well except for the summers)

yup you guessed it, i worked in McDonalds!! go on.. have a laugh lol

but anyway, for her age she wil lthink they pay is brilliant, i started @ 3.75, and loved it! (mind you i was 16, bu then again so is she) aint been there in a few years but id imagine that the pay is 4.25

the experiance in that place is one she would take away with her, its like being in a nursery school, there are some rite tools in it, but also the craic is good.

id advise her to go in for three months, then leeave lol, i failed my a levels because i worked to much, but if she could keep it on as a seasonal job

    Hi,

Try going to tescos etc because they are usually very good. I just got a job there with 17 hours a week that wont get in the way of college when I start in september. Pay isn't bad either, £5.20 per hour and I'm only 16. Remember though, it will vary on where you live because that includes location pay...

In Tesco's outside of London the pay for 16 and 17 years olds in 4.41, rising to 4.63 after you have worked for them for 6 months. It goes up agagin after you have been there for a year and then again when you turn 18.

Wherever you go you'll have to get in fast before the rest of school students finish and start looking.
