Euros to pounds/post office or cashpoint?

I'm working in Italy, and paid in Euros in an Italian bank, but I'm coming home for Christmas. Does anyone know if it's cheaper to change euros into pounds at the Post Office, or withdraw it in cash from the cashpoint? Could the bank charges be more than the PO commission?

Best thing to do is find a friend or family member who's planning a trip to Europe and make a deal...

Otherwise, you'll need to find out from your Italian bank what the charges for a UK withdrawal will be. A typical UK card would charge about 3% for a withdrawal in Italy, so it may be similar in reverse - I don't know. In comparison, the Post Office will skew the exchange rate by about 10% if you use the in-branch rates to change Euro to Sterling. So the card is likely to be cheaper than the PO.

The Travel Money Maximiser (as recommended by the previous poster) will show you some very cheap options but they are only really worth it if you live near a branch (most of them are in central London) or if you have a lot of money to change - in which case you can send them the Euro cash by Special Delivery and receive the Sterling in your UK bank account.
