Multi-Core Computing - Intel Runs 48 cores

Intel has been running their latest prototype 48 Processing cores on one chip. To top it off apparently Win 7 can control upto 256 cores. Who says multiple core processor are useless :)
However does it mean windows can run 48 types of malware at a time without any perfomance issues?

Can you handle the heat though? ;) I swapped out my E6600 for a Q6600 (don't really want to go the whole hog and get an i7 just yet, theres life in the old dog yet) but the temps scare the bejezus out of me!

The old Zalman had no trouble handling the duo, but with the quad it struggles. I see the 48 consumes 128W, thats quite a bit more than my quads' 95W. At this rate liquid cooling is going to have to become mainstream. :0

The top of the range AMD Phenom at the moment is 140W so the intel chip is chilly :) Any it can turn cores off anytime it wants, it is only 2.6W per core, yours is 23.75W :) per core

I always thought my Q6600 ran pretty cool, 20-30deg....

Now the i7s now those things can double as space heaters, idles at 40-50 and has a thermal ceiling of 100... /sigh

They've scrapped it now, the performance wasn't good enough.

That's a different technology. Your link is about Larrabee, an approach to creating a graphics card with initially 6 and possibly later up to 48 cores. The original post is about a 48 core processor from Intel's tera-scale computing research.

Looks interesting. In the present AMD and Intel have six core processors in their server line ups, and Intel will soon be releasing six core "Gulftown" desktop processors.

On the heat point, I'm using a Core i5 and it does get pretty hot. It has the widest range between "idle" and "load" temperature of any PC I've had. I get core temps of 30 or so at idle but more than double that when its fully loaded up.

Shame to hear about larrabee, now S3 only seem to concentrate on integrated graphics, I was hoping Intel would be the one company with enough know-how to muscle in on AMD ATI and nvidia. Maybe they'll just purchase nvidia instead!

The i9 is going to have 6 cores. Released next year.

There's going to be an i3 dual core as well, and a dual version of the i5.

Yes, you probably need to have 48 cores to get the best out of Vista / Win 7. And around 8 TB of RAM :D

Win 7 is pretty fast on a single core with 1GB RAM.
