Windows Installer Problem

Help please.
When I try to upgrade certain software, such as itunes newer version I get the following message.
'The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.'
I am running Windows XP Home Addition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.
Any ideas as to what I can do? thanks

When I type 'msiexec.exe/unregister' I get back the message 'msiexec.exe' is not recognised as an internal or external command operable programme or batchfile.
Any other ideas further ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are there any pieces of software that mght solve the problem? I looked at Regcure but that was a bit expensive.

I wouldn't touch that if I were you.

If typing msiexec or some variation thereof does not accomplish anything it's possible that the utility is either missing or has been disabled somehow. Can you install the latest version?
  • May be you can download the latest Microsoft Installer version.

I had the exact same problem on my laptop earlier this year. After much searching, I found a solution. Look here, scroll down a bit to Best Solution. Follow the instructions (download the file) and hopefully everything should be OK. It worked for me.
