Unusually high electric bill - advice required

Hi, today we have received our bill for electric (British Gas) for over £600! it states units used as 5836, which seems an awful lot, this bill in 2008 units used was 1460, and for 2007 units used was 1745. Now since our last bill we have had a new meter fitted as we were on a day and night rate meter, this was at the suggestion of British Gas as they said that we were getting a cheaper rate during the night but were paying a higher rate during the day and it would cut our bills to do this. Sounds to me like a !!!! up but were do I stand with this?

Any help would be appreciated as its worrying me sick.

ps I have emailed BG and am awaiting a response.

Perhaps no energy company actually knows how to add Rate 1 + Rate 4 to get total usage! I've had the same problem with (Southern) my former supplier (thank god I changed) and also got landed with enormous bill.

Have you got the meter readings at all for the period? It's going to help you enormously when you come to have to argue it.

Are you on the correct tariff?
I wouldn't worry about it for now but WRITE to them giving them all the evidence you have to show that they've billed you wrongly. It seems again, energy co's don't bother to respond to emails from consumers very often.

What does it say on your bill?
What tariff do you think you are supposed to be on?
I only ask because I knew for a fact that I had a duel fuel discount, whereas on the bill I received, it said 'Economy 7'. (Have now proved otherwise).

They will have a record of the old meter reading when the new one was put in.
