FA Credit Card with MBNA

We recived our bill today to find that the offer of 0% for 9 monts on purchases was not included and were given an estimated interest of £58 for next month.
I (think) originally saw this offer on this website - a free England shirt and 0% for 9 months on purchases and balance transfers (does anyone remember this offer?).

My partner also spoke to someone when the account was first opened and was told the same thing. On calling them this morning, not only did it take ages to get through to a real person, he was told it would take 2 weeks to check his application - they must be storing their info in the back of beyond!)
When he asked for the payment on the credit card to be refunded and the account closed he was told they couldn't do that and that we would have to pay the balance in ful.

As it is their mistake, why should we!

Anybody else having this problem?

Can't comment on your question, but was it this credit card by any chance?

Because then people could run up a big bill, complain about customer service and close their account claiming they shouldnt owe anything.

You can only close an empty card. Tell me why you should be able to close a card when you owe on it?

I opened this account and received my football shirt voucher yesterday, I only made a couple of small purchases from the supermarket. When I spoke to reps at MBNA they were helpful and confirmed the account that was being opened and the terms of the account. Have you registered for internet access, cos you should be able to see what terms you are on?

Not surprising at all when you consider that MBNA do not 'do' 0% on purchases - only on balance transfers. [That's only 'general advice' mind, as others frequently say on these threads: "Always read the terms and conditions"] But I always remind myself: "MBNA - never spend on then!" - and I never have...

I don't know if MBNA do an ‘interest free on purchases’ cards under their own name, but they do one for Abbey:
    http://www.abbey.com/index/cash/credit_cards_index/credit_cards_shopping_card.htm

I have one of those, the interest free period was clearly stated on the confirmation and has just ended.

But as far as I know, interest free is either on purchases or on transfers (but never on both).

I looked at this card when it was included in Martin's newsletter and I believe it was just 0% on balance transfers, NOT purchases. At the time I decided to buy an England shirt instead (£12 offer, again from one of Martin's newsletter articles) because I didn't want to use another credit search and I was also uncertain about whether the shirt would arrive before the world cup started.

Anyway I'm going off-topic here, but are you sure it was supposed to be 0% on purchases too? Do you have any documentation or emails from your original application which state this?

Quite right. I do remember now coming across the Abbey cards and noting it was MBNA-issued and thinking "That's unusual". But apart from Abbey I am not aware of any MBNA cards which do 0% on purchases. [If you think about it, it is an old MBNA trick to get customers to use their cards in the way that suits them - not the customer. Thus they entice you to spend on a card to that offers 0% on balance transfers and to do balance transfers on a card that offers 0% on purchases]

You'll need to pay the cost of all the purchases. You can argue about the rest.

First thing to do is check the terms on the acceptance letter you received, if any. Credit card companies do accept you for different cards from those you apply for and don't always make it clear that you don't have what you requested.

You'll know if you received the right card or not cos it has The FA and the 3 lions symbol on it

you CAN close an MBNA account with a balance on it. It just means that you will have to pay off the full balance. The account WILL be closed with MBNA and the card inactive but the statements and such will still be sent out until the balance is cleared.

Doing this however will mean that any rates cannot be reapplied .......

Call customer services and get them to obtain a copy of your application. This will have a unique rate code on it and MBNA will be able to see what rates were effective on your card and what should and should not be charged.

    Hope this helps.
