  • OK! Here's a bit of a non story. They won their little ruling. Yet I received today, a letter by email telling me that my bank (Halifax) will charge me £1 per day for an authorized overdraft (That's £30 per month on average, and £5 per day for unauthorized overdrafts (That's £150 per month on average)! So we lost in the courts and the banks are STILL ripping us of our flesh and souls. How in hell can they keep getting away with this? They say, "well, if you hadn't lived beyond your means in the first place, you wouldn't be in this predicament!" First off, I can say the very same thing to the banks. Secondly, what if you were made redundant and your only source of money left was your overdraft? We sometimes forget that the banks put us here and they don't seem to care about the very people keeping their heads aloft on the ocean of recession. I am still going to fight for the return of my monies no matter what! I urge every reader here to do the same. They dropped their charges so it wouldn't seem too much of a bite when they introduced their "NEW" charges. As we say in the States, there's a sucker born every minute. And the banks seem to know it.

I went £1.98 into an unauthorised overdraft and the Halifax have charged me £28 for doing this plus £35 for paying it for me. That's £63 for £1.98 overdrawn. I phoned the bank and explained that this doesn't normally happen and that I'm on maternity leave and therefore can't afford to pay these charges. They basically said it's not there problem and there's nothing they can do about it. They also informed me that if I didn't pay they would continue to apply more charges. I am absolutley furious about this. I wrote a letter of complaint to them but have yet to hear anything back. I won't be holding my breath!

Perhaps this government would like to see each and every account holder being charged say £10 or £20 per month plus 50p - 75p per transaction

I quite agree with the general principle. Glad you do too !

    I didn't say I did.

Just wondering what this government which is on it's last legs is thinking of? Remember, this government is unlikely to be in power much past Easter ... perhaps they are just trying to ensure that?
Remember, DC has already said he plans an emergency budget within 50 days of the "one eyed Scottish idiot" being ousted.

    I didn't say I did.

    That's a pity.

Unfortunately, there are some people posting on this site who won't be happy until those less fortunate than themselves are paying for their free gas , free electricity, free telephone, free mortgage, free holidays . . . Need I go on ?

    Oh ! Did I forget . . . free banking.

I don't think you quite get the jist of this site do you?

MoneySavingExperts exploit loopholes that mean they get cheap or free goods or services.
Or more specifically in Martins own words:
MoneySavingExpert.com® is dedicated to saving you money on anything & everything by finding the best deals and beating the system...
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/site/about-the-site

I'm not sure paying £500 a year for something that is currently available for free is a move many good MoneySavingExperts would approve of.

But if you would like to do so, shop around, I'm sure someone would offer you that facility if you prefer ;)

However, don't expect free money lending. As I posted elsewhere, no one is going to offer that unrestricted because if they do, I'll have my name down for the first couple of million quid to start :D

On the contrary, I think it is you who doesn't understand the point of this site.

There is a difference between saving money at the expense of rich fat-cat companies (e.g. banks, who employ every low trick in the book to separate us from our hard-earned cash) and saving money at the expense of the less fortunate who happen to have made a minor infringement of complicated terms & conditions.

I don't understand your post, can you explain it so that I can cos part of me is saying are you saying that charges are keeping free banking or aren't keeping free banking. Apologies but please can you explain the post in a different manner that is easier to read.
