what kind of 'new' ethernet adaptor have you installed? PCI? USB?
was it detected when you next turned the PC on (if PCI, USB should be instant)? did windows install a driver by itself or did you get a driver with it / from the manufacturers site for it?
can you see it in network connections?
(if PCI) can you see it in the control panel > device list?0 -
Are you saying you have added a 2nd ethernet port due to the fixed one on the PC being broken?
If so you may need to disable the old one in the Control Panel, but you will almost definately need to install the software for the new port.
Also not sure which version of windows(?) you are running but you might have to tell the OS which ethernet port to use to connect to the internet.0 -
not really up on pc terms .am running windows vista.the adaptor is a usb 2.0 ethernet adapter0

Not a good idea to use one of those, they tend to be flaky-as you have found. Much simpler just to replace the existing PCI ethernet card that is broken-they cost about a fiver. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Are you sure it's broke - I have seen lots and lots of cables with the tabs broke off, but I have never seen the card itself broke. Usual things that make the cable pull out are a broken piece of tab inside (which can usually be flicked out with a needle) or PCI cards not fitted straight - loosening the fixing screw and moving the card to one side usually sorts it. Sometimes with onboard LAN, the ATX backplate can interfere, and needs adjusting.beattiesman wrote: »the piece on side of pc where cable goes in has broke and cable jumps out0 -

Agreed. Far more likely that the cable plug is damaged, rather than the socket. That's what I'd be looking at first.0 -

I've never seen a broken port before - it is always the 'tab' on the cable, and that lets the cable jump out.
Get a new cable for Poundland - I think they cost about £1 there. DO NOT pay rip-off prices at PC World etc - they can charge £20 for EXACTLY the same thing.0 -
I "have" seen the port on the card damaged so the cable doesn't clip in. push the cable in and use a match or toothpick to wedge it in.
If by any chance you get a virus or the hamster explodes then I am not to be help liable ;p0
