Declaring a car SORN
Hi,
I would like to SORN my 2nd car for about 1/2 yr and I am not quite sure how it works. Can anyone advise please? I know I fill the form in and it can just sit on my drive. My Insurance finishes tonight and MOT in March. lets say I would like to start using it again in July. What is the process then? I believe I need to fill another form in and tax it, then I can insure it? when insured and taxed can I just drive to the MOT centre or do I need to MOT it in March when it expires?
Many thanks

You can declare SORN now and will get a refund of tax from Janaury onwards. You might consider still insuring it against theft only, if that's possible (I don't know).
When you want to get going again, the order would be: insure it, book and take it for an MOT, then tax it. This is because you're allowed on the road without tax expressly for travel to and from a pre-booked MOT appointment, but you need an MOT to apply for the tax.
If you don't intend to use it until July, I wouldn't bother with the MOT any earlier than that. It isn't a requirement for MOT valid periods to remain an unbroken sequence.0 -
As above but you can also sorn it online to save even getting a form, you will get e mail confirmation immediately and one sent to you in the post. Am thinking of a new one:beer:0

Have you checked with your insurer on this,as normally although you are covered on the new car for you to be able to drive the old one it must have it's own insuranceI

doesnt it work like this (as stated on my policy) as a policy holder i can drive someone elses car 3rd party?
Thank you0 -
Yes but that car still has to be insured! And to quote you " I can drive SOMEONE ELSES car" , this therefor isnt someone else's car its yours!
If that were the case then Im sure someone could buy a ferrari and a £200 banger and insure the banger and drive the ferrari all day! Doesnt work like that.0 -
That cover is intended for emergency use only on other cars, for example getting someone's car home if they are taken ill mid-trip, and is third party or Road Traffic Act minimum cover only.
I discussed this with my broker a few years ago when I wanted to do this to move a car 50 miles once. He said don't do it, such claims are always fully investigated by insurers as potentially fraudulent or a way to avoid paying for cover.0 -
Hi thanks for your comments. I should have been a bit clearer. I have a policy for my 1st car, and it states with permission of the owner of another car i can drive it 3rd party. What I need to do is move my 2nd car 4miles down the road and then keep it there. So all I need to know if I would be covered driving it on my 1st insurance. I do not intend to use the car after this 1 journey, but I want to do it legally and make sure I am covered for that 1 journey.
Many thanks0 -

I would just drive it:rolleyes:.
However, if you want to be sure just take out short term insurance for a day. The cost is not great.0
