Advice needed re portable external hard drives

I'm looking to buy a portable external hard drive for my son's acer laptop. I haven't a clue what to look for or which brand is the best. I would like 320gb or above - have seen a Seagate 320gb in Argos for £52.99 - is this a good deal and will it be compatible with a laptop? Any advice appreciated.

Or 500gb for a 69.99

Seagate would be fine, it's a good brand of hard disk0
