  • To be frank, even if he's fiddling his tax, it's not your problem

    Disagree:
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

We surely all have a duty as citizens to assist our fellow-citizens to keep within the law??

    Cheers!

I think you's are all way to suspicious,

A simple reason why he wants it in cash could be due to the fact that cheques bounce, direct debits can be stopped etc.

Maybe experience has taugh him it is best to collect the rent as cash in advance - guaranteed payment.
If a tenant has cheques bouncing etc. they can easily make sure they are not in or hiding when he comes to collect the rent. People use to do it in the past.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Fair enough - then shop him to the HMRC hotline. What I meant was that the OP should still comply with the perfectly legal request to pay the money in cash.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • I would be suspicious on any LL requesting a cash payment to the extent that i wouldn't get involved in the first place.

If you've been in the house a while a not missed a payment there is no reason the LL would worry that you would start stopping cheques / cancelling DD's.

however if my current LL declared he didn't want it going to his account and requested i started paying in cash, i would say no and if required leave.

I used to rent my house for about 18 months. The motgage wasnt buy to let so really i couldnt do it, however the tennent used to pay me by cash or cheque only.

I hated Cheque, as i had to wait for it to clear. But in saying that i also wasnt a big fan of cash as she would never pay me, only people who were around.
I would have prefered a DD or SO personally.

This is a good point - if the LL is insisting on cash to avoid being detected by the mortgage company - you have an illegal tenancy, and I think you can just get kicked out with minimal notice if they find out!

Aside from any possible shonky behaviour, I read the OP's main issue as being one of inconvenience - having to go to the ATM more than once... In a week/month??

Of course I don't know your circumstances, but exactly how hard is that for you both?

I'd suggest - if you're otherwise happy and don't want to put notice service thoughts in your LL's head - that you just swallow it.
Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response. :D

Look on the bright side - not many of us get such a great opportunity to aid and abet money laundering.

I left £10 note in my jeans when They were washed, does that count?

    Too many assumptions round here!
