Diesel vs Petrol

And another thing to take into consideration, is that diesels 'feel' different. I personally can't stand them, having to change gear all the time, turbo lag, and even brand new diesels still sound like a tractor.
Edit - now i've bothered to read your post properly, I can see you already have a diesel. Get a petrol, you'l thank me one day0 -

That is one thing I don't like about mine...there might as well be no first gear! But it does still push me back into my seat, even though I've had it 5 years and am used to it.
Taking a petrol for a test drive was like driving in a bubble of silence - felt very strange! Made me realise just how used I am to the sound of the diesel. I actually like the way diesels drive, excellent in-gear/overtaking ability. The true benefit has to be though if you're being tailgated - a petrol can't unleash a cloud of soot all over the tailgater! :rotfl:0 -

It all depends on how the prices of diesel and petrol will change. Anyway you will hardly find anything cheaper to buy, drive and maintain than the Clio. My advise would be to stick with hit.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

Thanks for all the replies. The Clio is costing me a fortune in maintaining for example my replacement gear box and clutch last year and the turbo sounds like it's about to give up.
Turbo's are a pleasant driving experience. Turbo lag is many times more on a petrol than a diesel and petrols with turbos are generally very expensive to fuel.
I'm going to look at a Mk 4 Golf GT TDi 150bhp (PD) tomorrow - would be perfect for what I am looking for. Nippy, reliable and good MPG.0 -
I think that Diesel is better on biogger cars or MPVs0

Also great when you have a poser in an open top behind you, just floor it in the highest gear possible,it's lovely looking in your mirror and seeing them drop back.Iv'e got a petrol now but really miss the diesel
Do you guys who drive diseasels do that on purpose? I always thought it'd be embarrasing when that happened. Kind of like showing everyone you can't afford to run a petrol!0 -
I remember leaving a cloud of smoke at a set of traffic lights once when I booted it away from a set of lights... must have been worrying for the guy behind meFight Crime : Shoot Back.

I disagree. I've always had bigger petrol cars and moved to a 535d when I was doing alot more miles (and to see what the hype was about :embarasse). But much much prefered the petrols I'd moved away from. Gone back to petrols again now. That BMW diesel engine's considered one of the best, up there with the Audi V8TDi and V12TDi but I'm still not converted. I find the Audi petrol V8's which are far from the best petrol engines available far better than the very best diesel engines.
Can't comment on MPVs but guess driving pleasure's less important on cars like that so it's probably better to go the whole hog and get am oil burner.0
