What a strange diagnosis for a car no one has even investigated.

Starting with the basics, someone really needs to establish whether it is a lack of fuel or lack of spark issue.

Lack of spark would be the usual suspect, and that would then mean start looking at the condition of the plugs & leads.

Only if there is a spark would I look at at fuel issue. As NickWarren said back as early as post#2 that could a blocked fuel filter (or even just a blocked fuel line)

I'd be worried about giving the car to a garage that was already talking about replacing an expensive fuel pump without having even looked at the car! :eek:

Btw, the old idea that a low fuel tank means you might pull grit & muck through the fuel pipes is a falacy I'm afraid. Grit & muck is usually heavier than petrol so will sink to the bottom of the tank anyway, whether full or empty.
And whereabouts does the fuel always get drawn from in the petrol tank?

(I've heard the same about water in the tank too - but remember petrol floats on water, not the other way round )
