ADSL, Printer, Telephone, Sky

I suck at this so I am hoping someone can help without laughing at me

I have a AIO printer. I have set it up to print wireless and it also has a fax. I have just set up the fact. Only thing is I only have one socket, I have a ADSL filter thing or splitter (whatever you call it)

Now it has been recommended that I connect the phone to the fax, the fax into the ADSL thing and the hub is also connected onto it with its own type of socket.

Only thing is, the socket at the back of the printer cannot connect the phone plug. Is there some sort of converter thing I could use?

Now I have the fax in, the sky is disconnected.

Is there a way I can connect the Sky, Fax, Landline and hub? Or shall I just stick with whatever is important and plug the rest in as I need it?

Does the fax have a designated socket for the phone, and if so, what is the type of connection.

You could use a BT type splitter to plug both the phone and fax into the adsl filter - when the phone rings, you won't know if it's data or human though.

  • I would not be able to tell you what type of connection it is, although it looks like the end of the cable for the hub it that makes any sense to you?

If by hub, you mean router, that may be a network port, unless it's smaller in which case it's a rj11 for a phone, does the port have a picture of a phone on it?

I assume you want to be able to plug your fax machine and telephone in but only have the one socket.
All you need is a socket doubler, which you should plug in to the telephone port on your ADSL filter.
    Pick them up anywhere.

Do you really need Sky to be connected?

If you post the model number of the printer perhaps we can find a pic of the connections on it.

A Sky box must be connected to the phone line for the first 12 months of your contract, unless you have paid for the £20 opt-out. If you have Multiroom, each box must be connected at all times.
You can plug a further doubler into the existing doubler if you need to, though it's a bit messy.
I think you are confusing a splitter/doubler with an ADSL filter?-entirely separate things.

Right - having found a picture of it on the web I suspect this is what you want to do.

In your phone socket on the wall you plug in your ADSL filter.

Into the ADSL part of it you plug in the cable that goes to your router/modem.
In the telephone part of it you plug a cable from there into the bottom of the two sockets on the back of the fax/printer.
Plug the cable from your telephone into the top socket on the back of the printer/ fax

If you need to have your Sky box connected, for as macman says multi-room, then stick a splitter, as pictured in penryhn's post, into the telephone output part of the ASDL filter. One cable from that will now go to the fax the other to your Sky box.

I have never had multi-room and had my Sky box connected to my phone line for less than a week. Never had any problems
