Can the bank reclaim money from your bank without contacting you

Last month the Abbey cleared a cheque in to my account for £800 by mistake. As I only checked my balance at the cashpoint I assumed it was some money that had been owed to me by a 3rd party. I have just checked my account now and they have retaken this money and said that it was an error on their part. It has now left me considerably overdrawn. Are the bank allowed to do this without contacting me first??

Yes. The bank can always get out of any situation, whoever's fault it was, by saying it is your responsibility to look after and administer your account correctly and always be aware of what's going on. And I ask myself on many occasions, "What do the banks get paid to do again!"0

its your own responsibility to run your account and keep tabs on what is due to come in and to go out. if you were doing this, you would have known that that amount wasn't due to be paid in and you would certainly have noticed it and could have found out where it was from.
but instead, you spent it. we see this time and time again on the boards and the answer is always the same - it wasn't yours to spend in the first place, the bank was right to reclaim it and you need to manage your account properly!Debts at LBM (May '08) £5760 - Lloyds CC £4260, Lloyds OD £1500;Debts as of May 28th 2011:Santander CC: £0.00Lloyds OD : £0.00DFW Nerd #1247 - Proudly dealt with my Debts

Get your money off the third party that really does coincidentally happen to owe you £800 and you can pay off the overdraft
(lets hope they've not stung you too much for extra charges in the meantime
