Mine is in Canada, cost me $10 for a year as a special offer, they are good as they will let you have one for free with no banners for nothing.

They charge a lot outside of the special offer, they are mine so give them a try, they are called netfirms.

Hosting a website is easy, find a good company that has a webserver and ask them to host your site. I host my own but its not a site that lots of people visit and I dont use it as a business so Im not bothered.

If you are looking to run a business from it the only way to go is to use a good company to host it. adding things to a site are usually done via FTP software, you log on to the server and transfer the files from your pc to the server, this can be a dangerous way to do things especially if you dont really know wht your doing you could overwrite a file and loose your site. so I would recomend letting someone who knows what they are doing deal with it. I have played with web design and have seen alot of site created by people that dont really know what they are doing and they look pants and dont really install confidence to people wanting to buy somthing from the site.
I know someone who ised to create e-commerce sites with an application called Actinic I think the site looks familiar, but he had been designing sites for a while so he picked it up easily I dont know if it is something someone with no experiance could use.

    So pay for hosting
Pay for the site to be created
Pay for it to be maintained after all its all goes down as an expense if there are any problems you dont have to fix it.

A company I have used for my customers for 7 years is traveltek they are based in East Kilbride in Scotland, they deal with the advantage travel center website which they created with their own in house development team. i know the name and the site just goes on about travel but that isnt the only thing they do so give them a try they are 100% reliable I have never had a problem in 7 years and all my customers have been happy.

    A basic what?
a basic site? an ecommerce site isnt basic.
a basic host? i can be a basic host but I wouldnt put an ecommerce site on there.

If you are serious about it your better not doing a half hearted thing and go with somthing decent from the start, if it looks bad people wont buy from you if it looks profesionall than your chances of a sale are hugely improved. The Lycos solutio also requires you to design the site are you up to that i know they have templates. I saw this site a few days ago aparently the guy paid for it to be created, the ecomerce part is a package but it has very little interactivity with the main page, it just looks like a bolt-on shop and the front end just looks so bad. I personally would never consider buying from a site that looks so bad so you need to have some idea of what your doing.

Also webistes dont generate traffice from search engines alone, you need advertise it but you alo still want people walking in to your shop if you have one but also want to expand to buyers that dont have the ability to visit your shop and buy online. Som companies will see you a package, register a domain, create the site, host, maintain and submit your site to search engines.
