The mysteries of Window Boards

I am shortly to move house, the new place was built around 1930 and to be honest the Window Boards are skanky and desperately need replacing, how were they fixed in those days, and should I make some kind of cavity closer when I change them. I have only ever done them on solid walled houses and usually use a little expanding foam and a couple of bricks as weights. Someone please tell me that they didn't use 6" nails or build them into the walls as they went up.
All help appreciated.

My guess would be they are fixed down with cut nails, cheap, nasty, but very effective.
Don’t close the cavity with bricks or similar as it will cause a ‘cold bridge’ and encourage condensation locally on the wall.
If the cavities aren’t insulated make it top priority, it makes a world of difference to condensation problems and fuel bills.I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes. :doh:0 -
Thanks for that I shall try to surgically remove the first one and have a look at what they did.The quicker you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up...0
