Typing on Keyboard very slow

Hi, the kids laptop is playing up. My son was trying to do his geography coursework (with facebook open) and complained that he had to hold down the letter keys for 3 seconds each to get a character on the page.

Does anyone know what this is? We have mcafee and have run virus checks but with no results found.

My husband spent ages last night trying unsuccessfully to find out what was wrong but it was a very slow process because of the typing problem.

Any advice gladly received.

    Right,

I'd first try plugging in a usb keyboard to see if there is a problem with the laptop keyboard. If that works, then the problem either lies with a faulty keyboard (perhaps a poor connection on ribbon cable) which is easy to fix if it just requires reseating, to about £20ish quid for a new keyboard if the fault is in the actual keyboard itself (depending on make/model). If the problem is with the motherboard, then that will be far more expensive, and probably uneconomical to repair.

Should the problem occur with both usb and laptop keyboard, try the following.
Restart PC and keep pressing F8 key until you see a menu. Select 'Safe Mode' and press enter. Press 'Yes' and try loading notepad or something and see if problem still exists.

    Possibilities, but not probabilities:

    - Go to the Control Panel and select KeyBoard. Set the 'Repeat Rate' to Fast and 'Repeat Delay' to Fast. If they are already set to these, modify one or both slightly. Then try typing in the 'Click here and try typing' box.

    - Go to the Control Panel and select Accessibility Options. Disable 'Sticky Keys' and possibly 'Filter Keys'.

    - The PC may have some sort of infection. You could run HijackThis and post here the log it generates to see if anything nasty is lurking on your machine.

    - This is worth reading, but be careful if you try it:
    http://www.watchingthenet.com/windows-vista-tip-how-to-fix-slow-keyboard-response-after-upgrade-from-windows-xp.html

    - If your laptop is a Dell, the last post on the page I just mentioned links to this:
    http://www.randomsupport.com/rs/blogs/index.php?blog=2&title=dell_laptop_slow_lagging_delayed_keyboar&disp=single&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

What it essentially says is that you should download AutoRuns from Microsoft and run it. Then find the Cyberlink PowerCinema PCMService and disable it. Then reboot the machine.

You can buy a new keyboard for about £4 in Asda/Argos/PC World.

Sometimes this sort of performance problem magically disappears when you shut down, power off and power on again!

Otherwise you might be running too many programs. (Or even viruses.)

When you say he had facebook open, was it a facebook application like bejewelled blitz or other game, a lot of the times these can cause lags.
