Soon to be aussie expat living in UK...

Hi folks, looks like you have quite the wealth of information on this site. Hoping you can allay my fears and provide some insight to me.

My partner is British and he has been living with me in Australia for 5 years now. He is now very keen to move back to the UK but reading about unemployment, and cost of living in UK has filled me with fear! We are very lucky here as I work in the mining industry and earn very good money, my partner earns slightly above average wages. We have a good level of comfort here but still my partner is not happy and longs for Blighty. ;)

Anyway, we will be moving to the East Midlands area at some point in the next 12 months. We have plenty to organise and save for in the meantime. I am interested to know about the employment scene. Neither of us have any qualifications but have been in our jobs for 5 years. I am a travel coordinator and my partner is goods/purchasing type job for an aviation company. I am studying at the moment though and can continue that with my Aus Uni whilst in the UK.

I have no illusions of grandeur when it comes to finding a job, I am sure that we will be lucky to find something which pays! My question is how much is an average wage for admin positions? Also, is anybody able to give me a run down of their budget, for things like groceries, utilities, transport, etc? Just like to know how much money we need when looking for jobs and what (if any) disposable income we are likely to have.

We have a mortgage in Aus and are hoping to keep our house here, so would definitely be renting there at first. Are rentals hard to find? Will we be fighting other applicants to get a house? Also, how to landlords react to pets in their rental house?

I have plenty of other questions, but that's enough for now. Thanks for reading! :A

    Hi scared_aussie,

You may also want to try posting this on the Moneysaving in Marriages, Families and Relationships board as a lot of MSE'rs generally stick to one or two boards as there is such a wealth of info here.

The debt free wannabe and debt free diary boards are very good for ideas on living within a tight budget, so pop in there too.

Search on user nykmedia of the Live on £4000 challenge to get some more ideas on frugal living. (Note £4K does not include everything you may be paying for over here).

Does your partner have family in the East Midlands? or is that just a familiar area to him?
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
  • He has family in East Midlands, just his parents and sister. He grew up there so has a small circle of friends there.
