EDF Energy Are A Rip OFF

I moved into my new home on October 2009 annd found out that the house was pre-payment for both Electric and Gas and had to sign up to EDF Energy as they were supplying the property before I moved in.

When I topped up I noticed that my gas was getting used really quickly in a week and was having to basically top my meter up every six days.

Come to 28th November I moved both my gas and eletric to Eon as I never had a problem with them when I was withem at my old address.

Come to Monday 7th December I checked the both meters and imagine my surprise when I checked both meters with 7 days I had only used £14.00 in gas and £9.00 in electric. When I was with EDF Energy I was using £28.00 within the same 7 days period for gas and £18.00 for electric within the same 7 day period.

I have asked EDF Energy for a breakdown in usage as I feel that I have been totally ripped off as both companies tariffs for pre-payement are basically the same and when it was worked out by Consumer Direct I had spent over £100.00 in gas alone from 21st October - 28 November. How can utility company get away with this and is there anything I can do about it.

Did you check if there was any debt on the meter when you moved in? Also did they send a new card to reset the meter?

.. it was worked out by Consumer Direct I had spent over £100.00 in gas alone from 21st October - 28 November. ...

What a pity they didn't explain further!

Unless a situation arose like that suggested by Joyful above, then if £100 really was representative of your actual consumption for the 38 days mentioned, then you'd be paying an extra £2.60 with E.On!!!

    PPM prices:

    EDF (based on dual fuel)
Primary units: 7.35 pence per kWh for initial 2680 kWh per annum
Secondary units: 3.209 pence per kWh

    Eon
Primary units: 6.525 pence per kWh for initial 2680 kWh per annum
Secondary units: 3.407 pence per kWh

In fact, even Ebico at a flat 3.675p per kWh would be cheaper than Eon, despite the rather high usage.

    Edit:
Alternatively, if you only use £14 worth of gas in 7 days with Eon, then the equivilent price with EDF would be just £13.81, or even lower at just £13.38 with Ebico.

Yes I did and apparently there was no debt on the machine and they did send me a new card. Also according to EDF the chips on the pre-payment card cannot be faulty as it wouldn't allow you to top up or it would come up with a fault on the meter. There was no gas leak either.

Als to pPremier When I switched over to Eon it isn't the 2680 unit at that price it is only 680 at the premier price. I have the litreature that they sent to me and it clearly states that 680 units at the premier rate then it is down to the secondary rate If you are saying that about only using so much in 7 days with EDF then how come I went through £50.00 then to the point that I had to basically switched the heating off to try and save money. There is no fault with the boiler either and the gas boiler was checked before I moved in and I do have a statement to say that the boiler has been checked. I get the feeling that EDF have made a monumental c!!k up here and when I first moved in I phoned EDF and was told by their customer services that they don't need any readings from me for my gas and electric. I know that every Utility company I have used have asked for readings for gas and electric when you first moved into a house no matter what meter you have in. I get the feeling that they have me down for imperial meter instead of Metric meter and are trying to cover it up so they don't have to pay it back to me. Anyway been back in touch with Consumer Direct and they have also gave me the address to send a letter to their mangament for customer services.

    680kWh or 670kWh ?

    2680kWh / 4 = 670kWh per quarter ;)

(I got my E.On prices from energyhelpline.com since I can never find them on the E.On site
uSwitch also show the same prices )

You used £14 worth of gas over 7 days which would be equivilent to about £70 over 38 days.
A mix up between imperial & metric meters would have been a 3 fold error, not about 1.5 fold

Put another way, if you belive the £100 from EDF was charged based on thew wrong type of meter, it should only really have cost about £35 ... or about £7 per week, not the £14 E.On are charging you. But then you did decide to go with a very expensive supplier when you chose E.On didn't you? Did someone mention Rip Off? :D

  • Just and update from me.

I have received the break down of the bill. It says that the meter readings are 3080 to 3383 when I left. Now that is an imperial reading. If it is a metric reading there would be 0 in front as metric is 5 digits. The total cost together according to EDF is £119.20 for 35 days of Gas. I had used only 303 units according to this KWH 3383. There is a mistake somewhere.

They have charged you on a metric basis. It would be almost 3 times this (2.87 times to be precise) if they charged you on an imperial basis.

E.On would have charged you £123.27 for the same consumption.;)
