Thought it might have been, but often it's the little things that are over looked. Looks like it's a system restore, or ask your mate.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.

If you can hang on until tomorrow, i would, your friend will be the best person to say what happened to the short cuts.

well i spoke to my friend who cleared up the space and he hasnt got a clue? he talks a good game lol !!! hes a pc forum moderator.
needless to say ive done a system restore, all is ok now but im back to the original problem now of only 3gb left on c drive and 5gb left on d drive.(60gb hdd, 30 on c and 30 on d)
i might pay someone to come and sort it for me? i have the backup discs i made when i bought the laptop. just seems to be running slow and the internet seems slow.
anyway im off to work now, will log in later to see if anyones got any tips. very tempted to get a new laptop for around £350.
i never downoad things, just use laptop for web browsing, banking etc.odd photos "which ive removed now" ms word etc.

    cheers for previous replies.

If you only use it for those uses, there's no need to stress about the free space - (until it has <0.5GB available on c, it doesn't matter), and no need to buy a new laptop or pay for a repair, scan it with malwarebytes to check for infections, cclceaner to clean up tmp files, scout around in explorer or windirstat to see where the space has gone -itunes/videos?, turn system restore off and back on to clean up restore points.
