Hi - wondered if anyone could help me. I left to go on maternity leave on 4th May this year and am returning to work on January 4th 2009. My company pay me nothing extra apart from the Statutory Maternity Pay. I am still being taxed on this amount which I am a bit suprised at seeing as I hadn't even done one full month at full pay since the start of the financial year. My annual wage is £21,000 and according to my last payslip my gross pay to date is 6,999.33 so I am only just over the personal allowance threshold before tax or am I being really dumb? If someone could let me know whether I will be able to claim back some tax or whether it will just balance itself out on my return to work I would be really grateful. Thanks to all

When I was being paid SMP I still paid tax on SMP but not alot I think one month I got a credit back. SMP is taxable.
Are you still being taxed the same amount? It is normally adjusted automatically with every pay run according to your earnings. At the end of the tax year when you have your P60 call the tax office and they can check if you have paid too much tax.0 -
The annual allowance from April 2009 to March 2010 is £6475, but this is broken down into monthly or weekly figures.
Whichever way you look at it, you will be paying some tax this year as your income already exceeds the personal allowance.
The only way your tax could be wrong is if you are being taxed on a week or month 1 basis - it will show on your payslip as M1 or W1.0
