Right click My Computer > Click Manage > in the left hand pane select Disk Management.
This should show all the drives connected on in the computer, the top being the ones picked up by Windows and the drive letters assigned, the bottom being the actual drives and how they are partitioned (if they are partitioned). Select the hard drive that is marked as Free Space (luckily i have a part of my hard drive in this situation, see image) right click and select the New Logical Drive (or whatever is available to make it usable).

Disk 0 will be your main hard drive with the Windows partition on it. DO NOT TOUCH if you don't know what your doing, you could lose everything.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
  • I dont have that here just disk 0 nothing saying free space as on diagram so i guess the maxtor isnt showing?

If you only have a Disk 0 then you need to check that your BIOS is picking it up. When you start your computer do you get the screen showing Primary Master, Primary Slave, Secondary Master, Secondary Slave. If so does your maxtor drive show there?
