external hard drive does not show on vista

    What closed is saying is that you need to take the hard drive out the caddy (if you can) and insert it into a desktop PC. If your not sure what your doing probably best to get someone to do it for you.

    i can do that no problem , but is that just for the data recovery? or will i be able to assign a letter that way?

    There is more chance of it being picked up, but if you do get access to it, get what you need off first and foremost, then try a disk check on the drive, looking to find and fix bad sectors (drive > properties > tools tab > error checking > select both boxes and click ok) this will take a while, but means that you might get some more time to get the rest of your stuff off.

    Yeah as if your having problems just now, even if you get it sorted, the chances of it going wrong again are higher.

    The free space that is on my drive is a partition that was causing issues, thankfully because i had it all partitioned i managed to isolate the issue, and don't really have anything i'm worried about loosing on any of the other partitions.
    Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
