Hi,
Im in the market for a set of good earphones but im stumped at what....
They need to be in ear type - and "Y" shape cord rather than the split one where it goes round the back of your neck (the last 4 types like these all split)
I've always used Sony but they don't have any high end ones with a Y shape cord, and im afraid that's where my knowledge ends...
Got £40 to spend on a set (could maybe stretch higher if they are worth it)

The Sennheiser CX-500s have really good reviews, and are pretty cheap. Sennheiser are a renound, professional audio company, so you can expect good sound quality.
Other brands to watch out for include Shure, and, as you have said, Sony. The quickest way to become a millionaire is start off as a billionaire and go into the airline business.

Yeah sennheiser seem real nice, reading a lot of good things about them. Im liking the CX 550's.0

I have a pair of Senheisser CX300's and am pleased with them, had them for close to two years. Another brand worth considering is Klipsch Image X1 Headphones just over half price at Ama-zon0

grado SR60. A little bit more money (or a good sale) will net you a pair of denon D1001.0

I liked the Sennheiser CX300s too, but the OP needs to know that they have an asymmetric cable, not a Y one. Have never tries the CX500s so can't comment.
At the moment I have some Creative EPP-630/As - only £9 on amazon and they do have a Y cable. TBH I think they're just as good as the CX300s for mp3 player use.
Agree with devon977 that the Grado's are very good 'phones but they aren't what the OP wants (specifically stated in-ear). Also (some people might disagree) I think they're overkill for sticking in an mp3 player. I love them on a good quality source, but if you're listening to compressed mp3/aac files (which 99% of people are) then you might as well go with something cheaper.0 -
The Shure E2C (now known as the Shure SCL2) in-ear monitors are pretty good. They fit quite deeply in your ears, which dramatically cuts down background noise. I often use them on the bus without playing music, just to cut down the noise of the chavs chatting on their mobiles!
You can probably find a pair for around £60...0 -
If buying the Sennheiser watch out for fakes as there are a lot of them about - buy from a reputable dealer.
